SKILLS FOR RHYL

Rhyl City Strategy is starting the New Year with a programme of training courses to help local unemployed people develop skills to support them into work.

Local residents were invited to come along to find out more about the programme and to sign up for courses at two open days, held at the Oaktree Centre and the White Rose Centre on 12th and 16th January.  Anyone who is currently unemployed/economically inactive and living in Rhyl is eligible to take part in the training, which has been funded through the Welsh Assembly Government's Department of Children, Education and Lifelong Learning to tackle skills shortages and economic inactivity in the town.

The programme covers a wide range of skills including health and social care, countryside management and horticulture, business administration, hospitality and catering and lifeguards, as well as courses to help people in their personal development and motivation.  The courses will take place in a range of community venues across Rhyl, with most courses starting in January.  Courses are provided by Coleg Llandrillo Rhyl / Rhos, Zeta Training, North Wales Training, Teambuild Wales, BTCV Cymru, Future Builders, Cymdeithas Tai Hafon, SOVA and TAPE.

                         Training Hotel

As part of its vision for the next two years, Rhyl City Strategy is working with partners to develop a number of schemes offering ‘intermediate labour market’ opportunities.  These schemes will
allow individuals further from the labour market an opportunity to
gain hands-on training in a real working environment, often within a social enterprise.  A number of ILMs were funded through the previous Objective One programme, and Convergence funding has recently been announced for a new North Wales ILM programme run by the Wales Council for Voluntary Action.

One of Rhyl City Strategy’s more ambitious plans is to establish a “training hotel” social enterprise.  The venture will offer a first class service to visitors to the area, while offering skills training in the hospitality sector to unemployed and economically inactive individuals.   The project is in its early stages, with a business plan currently in preparation, and with a steering group looking for a potential site to establish the proposed facility.  We would like to hear from you if you think you can contribute to the proposed project in any way.
