Skills For Work
The following programmes offer the opportunity to develop employability skills in a number of vocational areas. For more information and to find out when the next course is running, contact the individual providers direct.
Get Into Sport and Leisure
This is a full-time, five-week course for anyone aged 16 – 25, who is unemployed, not in education or any other training who is interested in working in the leisure industry.
The course will include:
Employability and soft skills,
Vocational qualifications including NPLQ (lifeguards), First aid, Health and safety and CSLA (community sports leadership award),
Two weeks work experience,
A final presentation.
The course will be delivered by Conwy Council at Colwyn Bay leisure centre, and anybody referred must be job ready, and able to commit to the full 5 weeks of the course. The course is full-time, Monday – Friday and will include some early mornings (8am) to complete the NPLQ qualification. Any young person referred MUST be able to swim.
Following the course there is the option of 6 months progression support for each participant if they wish, to assist with helping to find employment or further training.
Lunch and transport will be paid for for the duration of the course.
Everybody interested in the programme MUST attend the Taster day which will be held on Tuesday 9th November. This will be a basic introduction to the course content, a swimming test and short interviews for everybody who is still interested. There is a maximum of 15 places on the course therefore there will be a selection process.

Retail Skills
An ‘employment route way’ programme offering retail vocational skills within a real work environment, basic skills and gain industry recognised qualifications
whilst enhancing employment prospects. The courses are delivered in the Learning Shop at the Hub in Wellington Road, and include relevant, fun and engaging ways of developing skills and knowledge. These skills are transferred into practical work experience in the Llandrillo College’s shop ‘Browsers’.

Hospitality & Catering
The course provides training and support for those interested in employment in the hospitality and catering sector.
The programme is delivered in the North Wales Women’s Centre, and supports participants and Centre staff to develop the catering skills needed to run a small catering facility at the Centre. North Wales Women’s Centre also offers the facilitation of childcare to support those who need it.

Business Administration Skills
This programme enables participants to develop business, administrative and ICT skills whilst gaining industry recognised qualifications and preparing for employment. Delivery is in bite size chunks enabling learners to complete individual qualifications, continue with next step, or leave to take up employment.
The courses run for 12-15 hours per week, with mentoring and support for students to progress to their next step, whether this be work or further training.

Learning Support
This course offers participants the opportunity to develop sector specific skills and industry recognised qualifications in learning support.
The programme provides an integrated package of support to help participants into employment during and after the life of the project, and covers;
- Personal development, CV’s, interview techniques and support with job applications.
- Vocational skills and qualifications required by the sector, including life coaching, equality and diversity, confidentiality, data protection, disability awareness, customer care, POVA training,
- Skills to support learning, first steps in informal learning, mentoring skills, advocacy skills, mental health and support work, first aid, risk management and health and safety.
